Ersatz für grausamen Draize-Test an Kaninchen international anerkannt

Nach über einem Jahrzehnt wissenschaftlicher Forschung und Lobbyarbeit von Tierschutzorganisationen hat die Organisation für Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (OECD) in Paris am 22. Juli diesen Jahres eine neue tierversuchsfreie Richtlinie zur Prüfung auf Hautreizung anerkannt. Diese steht nun zur sofortigen Anwendung für Firmen und Behörden weltweit bereit. Der Deutsche Tierschutzbund begrüßt diesen Schritt.

Jährlich 600.000 Botox-Opfer

Die bundesweite Vereinigung Ärzte gegen Tierversuche hat in der aktuellen Ausgabe des Wissenschaftsjournals Altex eine Berechnung der Anzahl der Tiere vorgelegt, die durch die Testung von Botox-Produkten sterben. Demnach müssen weltweit mehr als 600.000 Mäuse einen „qualvollen Erstickungstod“ erleiden. Da sogenannte Alternativmethoden vorhanden sind, sieht der Verein einen Verstoß gegen geltendes Tierschutzrecht und fordert ein Moratorium für die kosmetische Anwendung bis die tierversuchsfreien Methoden anerkannt sind.

EU Council accused of issuing misleading public statement on animal testing

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), a coalition of animal protection groups across Europe, has accused the EU Council of Ministers of issuing a highly misleading press statement about the changes to the animal experiments directive (Directive 86/609). The ECEAE has made a formal complaint of maladminstration to the European Ombudsman against the Council.

Da den Ländern nicht erlaubt ist, national strengere Maßstäbe zu erlassen, bleibt der Tierschutz auf niedrigem Niveau zementiert, fürchtet der Ärzteverein.

European Agency Promotes Non-Animal Tests in Massive Chemicals Programme

London - In a move welcomed by international animal protection organisations, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has today published new guidance specifically designed to help chemical manufacturers avoid animal testing while meeting the requirements of the European Union’s new chemicals testing programme, known as REACH. Introduced in 2007, the REACH programme (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) requires chemical companies to provide safety data on tens of thousands of chemicals already in use in the EU. Experts estimate that anywhere between 7.5 and 50m animals could be used in new tests as a result. The first of several deadlines for submission of test data is in December this year.

European ministers accused of misleading the public over animal experiments law

The ECEAE (European Coalition to End Animal Experiments), a coalition of animal protection groups across the EU, has today accused European ministers of seriously misleading the public over a new law about animal experiments. The current law, Directive 86/609, is being revised.
